Doctors, lawyers, accountants, architects, and other professionals have accredited degrees and licenses to assure their clients of their ability to perform. As a technologist, your credentials come in the form of certifications that are far more specific to specific technology platforms. Here’s how to leverage your credentials to expand your career.
- JD. CPA. AIA. Ph.D. We see them all the time posted on the walls of offices for our doctors, lawyers, accountants, and other professionals. The certificates they are printed on are very nice looking, fancy print, telling us that they have completed the course of instruction required to qualify them. We find this reassuring and comforting, knowing that they have done the required work to enable them to do what we need to be done.
IT clients want the same reassurance, the same comfort. While their health or even their very life may not depend upon it, their business often does. For many, their business IS their life.
Power in Numbers
As a technology professional, you actually have the opportunity to provide even deeper reassurance. As you move through your career and take more training on more platforms and more diverse disciplines, you earn more and more certifications.
When you can show your client that you have certificated in the specific technologies they need help with, and even have certification directly from the manufacturer of the equipment they use, you vote more confidence to them with much finer granularity than any other professional could. “The more you know,” represented by the more certifications you hold, becomes greater trustworthiness and confidence from your client, and nothing is more important.
Courses you take at New Horizons Computer Learning Centers and the certificates you receive confirming your successful completion, qualify you for specific high-level positions. For example, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) requires that you hold a CompTIA A+ and/or Network+ certification that you can earn at New Horizons.
What’s perhaps most important is the way holding these certifications changes the way you regard yourself. With every certificate your confidence and your pride in the investments you’ve made in yourself increase. You carry yourself differently. You interact with potential employers differently. You can prove that you know what you’re doing. You have it documented. You’ve earned their respect.
